Last week Janet & Ray celebrated thier 50th wedding anniversary. Son Mike and daughter-in-law Rebecca surprised them with a fabulous anniversary cake customized just for them. The cake was decorated with cute little sugar sculptures of the happy couple doing the things they love the most! The bottom tier had scenes with Janet shopping at her favourite mall, and doing some sewing, while Ray had scenes playing the slots and drinking coffee. The top tier had Ray fishing in a lake while Janet swam by, and if you look close you’ll see that Ray is about to catch her on his line!

Mike & Rebecca travelled all the way to Kamloops to give thier parents this wonderful surprise, much to thier delight. And Ray was most happy to see he had hit the jack-pot!

I had so much fun making this cake, and seeing thier smiling faces make it all the more worthwhile. All of us here at Mozart Bakery & Cafe want to congratulate Janet & Ray on thier 50th anniversary, and we wish you both all the best!

Urban Wedding Gala 2008

On Saturday October 18 we attended the Urban Wedding Gala at the Roundhouse in Yaletown.  We want to thank all the couples who came by our booth, it was great to meet you and we look forward to working with you to create your wedding cake!

Staff Appreciation Day at the PNE

We’ve got great staff who work really hard for us, and after a long summer we thought they deserved a day of fun, what better place than the PNE!  We had a great time; ate too much, went on lots of rides, saw a few Elvis impersonators, and I won a blue monkey!

Unfortunately Cassandra and Krista weren’t able to make it, but Steve-O, Olivia, Kezia, and Annalise all joined Lou and I, along with our two boys Dylan and Jake.

Wanted: Pastry Chef Assistant!!

This position has been filled, we welcome our new assistant Brenna!  She’s been with us for about a month now and is a great addition to out team!

We are still looking for a pastry chef assistant!

We need an enthusiastic, hard-working and creative person who is passionate about pastry and desserts.  Someone who has a keen eye for detail and the ability to work independantly; someone who is able to multi-task and work under pressure to meet deadlines, while producing consistant quality desserts.

This is a skilled position, to qualify for the job you must have completed baking and pastry training at culinary school AND have at least one year of relevant industry experience.  The Wilton cake decorating course does not qualify as training.  Relevant experience MUST include pastry work, either in a retail bakery setting or in food service; bread baking alone is not adequate experience as this position does not require any bread baking.

I’m sorry that it took me this long to get back to you. I have to say that I was beyond thrilled with my cake!!!!!!!!!! It was simply the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen!! And the taste, well, that was incredible! Everyone just loved it. When I show people back home the pictures of it, they can’t believe it! It is so unique and fun looking, and the colors were beautiful. I can’t rave about it enough. Thank you for helping make our special day so wonderful.

We’re proud to anounce that we are using new biodegradable packaging wherever possible. 

Our cold drink cups and salad containers are made of corn based plastic, which is compostable and biodegradable.  We’ll soon be using potato-based disposable cutlery, also compostable and biodegradable, we’re just waiting for our supplier to get them in stock, any day now.  

Our plastic carry-home bags are made from a biodegradable material which is a by-product of the plastic making process, so not only does it biodegrade in the land-fill, it also reduces the amount of industrial waste being put in the landfill.  These bags can also be recycled along with regular plastic shopping bags. 

While we are very excited about these new products, we still encourage our customers to bring in thier own re-usable shopping bags, and whenever you can please enjoy your coffee or your lunch in our cafe, where we can serve your food and drinks on real dishes.

We certainly make no claims to being a “green” company, but we are doing what we can to be as envioronmentally friendly as possible in our business practices.  We are using compact flourescent lights, all our printing is done on recycled paper, we’ve installed anti-glare tint on our windows to reduce energy consumption, and we are delivering our wedding cakes in a fuel-efficient SmartCar.  We’ll continue to make changes wherever we can!
